Address a Prescription Pending Approval

1 On the Message Center tab, click Prescriptions > Action Items.

Tip: You can also access the Action Items list by clicking the Action Items link from the Quick View page, or by clicking Prescriptions > Action Items from a patient’s summary.

2 To view activity for a specific provider within the organization, click a provider in the Provider Filter list.

3 Click an item in the Pending Approvals list to view the prescription.

Note: Some prescriptions in the Pending Approvals list may include status messages regarding associated prior authorization requests. For more information about managing prior authorization requests from the Action Items list, see Address a Prescription with a Prior Authorization Request.

4 Click Edit (while viewing the prescription).

5 In the prescription area of the Rx pad, review the pending prescription as written.

Notes:  

If clinically-relevant information is available for a medication, a message appears on the Rx pad beneath the medication. Review the message, and if applicable, follow any links to additional information.

If you want to view additional information about a medication included on the prescription, such as side effects or warnings, click or . For more information, see Viewing Drug Reference Information.

6 If necessary, modify the prescription. For instructions on modifying the prescription items, see Refilling a Previously Prescribed Medication or Supply.

7 If offers are available, clear the Print Offers on Approval check box if you do not want the offer for the medication(s) printed upon approval.

Note: If any medications have an offer which can be sent to the pharmacy, the Send Offer to Pharmacy check box appears next to each medication that qualifies. You can clear this check box if you do not want to send the offer to the pharmacy upon approval.

8 Do one of the following to address the pending prescription:

Note: If there is more than one prescription with a Pending Approval status for this patient, all pending prescriptions appear in the Rx box. For each pending prescription you want to address, select the check box next to the prescription, and then repeat steps 5-8.

Click Print & Approve to submit the prescription to the pharmacy (either electronically or by fax) and print a paper copy of the prescription locally.

Note: If the prescription you are printing has a Sample/Handwritten delivery option specified, two copies of the prescription are printed.

Click Approve to submit the pending prescription to the pharmacy (either electronically or by fax) without printing it.

Click Save as Pending to re-save the prescription as “pending.”

Click next to medication or supply name to deny the prescription.

9 If your organization has EPCS, you are an approved EPCS prescriber, and you are prescribing one or more Schedule II-V drugs:

Note: The option to submit prescriptions for controlled substances electronically is only available for prescribers after an EPCS Administrator has enabled the Allow controlled substances to be electronically prescribed organization preference. For more information, see Set ePrescribing Preferences for an Organization.

a Review the medications listed on the Sign Prescriptions for Controlled Substances dialog box and select the check box next to each medication you want to prescribe.

b Type your Care360 ePrescribing or EHR password in the Care360 Password box.

c Push the button on your OTP token to view your one-time password and then type it in the One-time Password box.

d Click Sign and Send.

Note: If you receive a message that indicates that your OTP token is out-of-sync, see Manage OTP Tokens for information on re-syncing your OTP token.
