Address a Prescription Pending Renewal

1 On the Message Center tab, click Prescriptions > Action Items.

Tip: You can also access the Action Items list by clicking the Action Items link from the Quick View page, or by clicking Prescriptions > Action Items from a patient’s summary.

2 To view activity for a specific provider within the organization, click a provider in the Provider Filter list.

3 Click an item in the Pending Renewals list to view the prescription.

4 Click Edit (while viewing the prescription).

5 Review the following table to determine whether or not you are authorized to address the renewal:

You can approve or deny the renewal request as submitted. Prescription fields appear as read-only, except for the Refills box, which can be modified. Schedule II-V controlled substances cannot be renewed. You must deny the renewal request and create a new prescription for the same medication. To do so, click Deny & Create New Rx.

The renewal request is denied, and a new prescription can be written. While writing a new prescription, refer to the denied renewal medication information for medication details from the renewal request.

6 For a valid renewal request, modify the number of refills, as needed.

To view additional information about a medication included on the prescription, such as side effects or warnings, click or . For more information, see Viewing Drug Reference Information.

Note: If clinically-relevant information is available for a medication, a message appears on the Rx pad beneath the medication. Review the message, and if applicable, follow any links to additional information.

7 Do one of the following (as applicable) to address the renewal request:

Note: If there is more than one prescription with a Pending Renewal status for this patient, all pending prescriptions appear. For each pending prescription you want to address, select the check box next to the prescription, and then repeat steps 5–7.

Click Print & Approve to immediately submit the prescription renewal to the pharmacy (either electronically or by fax) and print a paper copy of the prescription locally.

Note: If the prescription you are printing has a Sample/Handwritten delivery option specified, two copies of the prescription are printed.

Click Approve to immediately submit the prescription renewal to the pharmacy (either electronically or by fax) without printing it.

Click Deny & Create New to deny the renewal request and immediately initiate the creation of a new prescription. When the Denial Reason dialog box appears, select the most appropriate denial reason and then click Save.

Notes:  

If you select Other as a reason, you must manually enter an explanation for the denial in the text box.

If you want to change the pharmacy for the prescription, use the Prescription transferred to another pharmacy reason.

Once the new prescription is completed, approve or print the prescription as needed. For instructions on writing a new prescription, refer to Writing a New Prescription .

Click Deny to deny the renewal request. When the Denial Reason dialog box appears, select the most appropriate denial reason, and then click Save.
