While viewing the Quick View page, you can easily access prescription items that require your attention in the prescription Action Items list. Actions may include approving or denying pending prescription items (set to pending when written), approving renewal requests (received from a pharmacy), viewing prescriptions with in progress prior authorization requests and addressing denied requests, or addressing failed fax, failed electronic, or electronic mail order prescription items.
When you access the prescription Action Items list, a list of all prescription items needing action appears, including the current status of each item. Depending on the action that you want to perform for each item, you may be directed to the prescription area of Care360 ePrescribing or EHR to address it.

Once a prescription has been written, it might pass through a number of states (within Care360 ePrescribing or EHR) before it is ultimately submitted to the pharmacy to be filled. The following table lists information about the various Action Item queues and the status of a prescription, as it appears in the Action Items, Sent Items, or Queued Items lists, as well as a brief description and the required action (if any).
Status |
Description |
Required Action |
Approved |
The prescription has been approved by an authorized user and successfully faxed or electronically sent to the pharmacy. |
No further action is required. |
Approved On-Hold |

The prescription remains in this state until the prior authorization request is approved. No further action is required unless the prior authorization is denied. |
Prior Auth Pending/ On-Hold |
The prescription is neither approved nor pending and is awaiting a decision on an in progress prior authorization request. |
The prescription remains in this state until an authorized user approves or saves the prescription as pending, or the prior authorization request is approved. No further action is required unless the prior authorization is denied. |

The prescription has been cancelled by an authorized user. |
Unless you want to resend the prescription to the pharmacy, no further action is required. |

No further action is required. |

The prescription remains in this state until the electronic prescription is printed or automatically removed by the system after seven days. A failed electronic prescription can only be printed once for a “wet” signature. Note: The Failed Electronic Prescription queue is only available to Care360 ePrescribing or EHR organizations that have EPCS or in states where the faxing of prescriptions is not allowed. |

Unless you want to resend the prescription to the pharmacy, no further action is required. You will need to start a new prescription to do so. Note: The Printed Failed Electronic Prescription queue is only available to Care360 ePrescribing or EHR organizations that have EPCS or in states where the faxing of prescriptions is not allowed. |

When Care360 ePrescribing or EHR receives a prescription renewal request from a participating pharmacy, the prescription is added to the prescription Action Items list with a Pending Renewal status. Only one medication can be included per renewal request. If you choose to approve a renewal request as written, you can modify the number of refills, but you cannot modify any other prescription information (which appears as read-only).
Before you can approve a prescription renewal request, a number of conditions must be met:
• Are you the provider associated with the renewal request?
If you are the provider associated with the renewal request, then you can approve the prescription as written (assuming that a valid National Drug Code (NDC) number is provided, as described below).
If you are not the associated provider (for example, if you are covering for another physician who is currently on vacation), then you cannot approve the prescription as written. You can, however, deny the renewal request and create a new prescription for the same medication. Care360 ePrescribing or EHR simplifies this process by allowing you to deny the renewal and create a new prescription for the same medication in a single step. For more information about addressing a pending renewal, see Address a Prescription Pending Renewal.
• Is the NDC number provided for the requested medication?
If a valid NDC number is provided for the requested medication, then you can approve the prescription as written (assuming that you are the associated provider, as described above).
If the NDC number is not included, or the included NDC number is not valid, then you cannot approve the prescription as written. You can, however, deny the renewal request and create a new prescription for the same medication. Care360 ePrescribing or EHR simplifies this process by displaying the medication information from the renewal request as you write the new prescription, allowing you to easily re-create the original prescription.
• Are you authorized to approve prescriptions?
If the NDC number is provided for the requested medication, but you are not authorized (in Care360 ePrescribing or EHR) to approve prescriptions, then you cannot perform any action on the renewal request.
If the NDC number is not included with the renewal request, then you may still be able to deny the renewal request and create a new prescription. However, you can only save the new prescription so it is assigned the Pending Approval status (for later approval by an authorized user). Again, Care360 ePrescribing or EHR simplifies this process by allowing you to deny the renewal and create a new prescription for the same medication in a single step. For more information about addressing a pending renewal, see Address a Prescription Pending Renewal.
• Is this a request to renew a schedule II-V controlled substance?
Renewals of schedule II-V controlled substances are prohibited in Care360 ePrescribing or EHR. If the patient needs a new prescription, you can deny the renewal and create a new prescription for the drug.
Notes: • Any time you deny a prescription renewal request, you must first click the most appropriate reason for denying it in the Deny Reason list. If you select Other, you must manually enter an explanation for the denial in the text box. • If you have a renewal request for GHB (gammahydroxybutyric acid), the reason (medical need) needs to be sent to the pharmacy. You should deny the request using the Deny & Create New option, and then in the new prescription add the GHB: <reason> in the Notes to Pharmacist box. • If you have a renewal request for Schedule III, IV, or V narcotic drug approved by FDA specifically for “detoxification treatment” or “maintenance treatment”, the request should be denied using the Deny & Create New option, and then the new prescription should have NADEAN: <number> in the Notes to Pharmacist box. • Before you can begin receiving renewal requests from participating pharmacies, you must send a minimum of five electronic prescriptions. |
